body: the key to feel good fitness with emma obayuvana

body: the key to feel good fitness with emma obayuvana

2020 has seen fitness transform forever. With so many of us prioritising our health and wellbeing, our need to train and look after our bodies has become an essential part of our daily lives. Swapping going to the gym to working out in our front rooms and heading outside and using nature as our training ground. During lockdown, the fitness world innovated over night and trainers across the world connected with their clients via zoom classes and one to one virtual sessions. This has paved the way for a new generation of instructor. One that has had to become not only resilient to the current climate but now has the ability to share what they do with audiences across the globe.

Meet Fitness Trainer Emma Obayuvana, who over the last few months has become a go to voice for energising so many of us through home work outs. Working closely with Stylist Magazine and Strong Woman, she is passionate about any form of movement that feels good, whether it's dance, walking, yoga, running, strength training or combination of all. Her belief is that movement is key and through it we can greatly improve our physical and mental wellbeing. With a mission to empower and bring joy and fun though fitness, her ultimate goal is make you feel good about yourself. She lifts heavy and knows that If she see smiles after her classes then her work is done.

Following you on Instagram, you train hard. How often a week do you work out and what are three exercises that you can’t do without?

I am very intuitive when it comes to my training and really listen to my body, scaling back if I feel I need to take it easier on my joints. Sometimes I go hard and sometimes I take it much easier. My go to are Deadlifts, Reverse Lunges and Cleans.

So many of us have changed the way that we train recently and there has been a huge move to online fitness. How can you ensure that you stay committed when training from home?

The advantage of training at home is having flexibility with your schedule and your environment.

  • Schedule your workouts at the start of the week, so you have a plan.

  • Pick the days and time of the days when you are most motivated. If you are not a morning person, there is no point forcing yourself to workout in the morning just because you think you should.

  • Set up your environment to facilitate the activity you are about to do. Yoga? Light candles, dim light, burn incense, make delicious tea, get cosy, whatever works. Weights to HIIT? Put on your favourite tunes, crank up the volume, throw on your favourite kit and have a lil fitness party!

  • Chunk it down. Perhaps it’'s easier to have shorter workouts, than long ones?

If you don’t have weights available to you, what exercises can help to deliver similar results?

I feel nothing rivals your body developing using free weights, however good maintenance body weight exercises need to be combined with tempo work. Press up, squats, split squats, step ups, tricep dips, planks.

Which online classes do people need to know about right now?

It’s all about @strongwomenuk 8am Instagram lives on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

When it comes to nutrition, are there any rules that you stick to?

Cooking from scratch as much as possible, eating 'real' fresh food and not eating right before going to bed.

Which is your favourite exercise of all time?

Deadlifts!

What are some of the fitness trends you think that we will see more of moving in to 2021?

Continued flexibility when it comes to training. On demand online and streaming workouts co-existing with studio and gym classes. More focus on getting the body more prepared for workouts, as well as continued onus on recovery. To summarise, flexibility of your workout environment, mobility and rehab work, functional training.
